USC held the Aggies to negative hitting in a 3-0 sweep to open the USC/LMU Classic tournament

LOS ANGELES – The No. 23-ranked USC women's volleyball team (4-2) swept Utah State (1-5) in straight sets (25-12, 25-20, 25-19) to open the USC/LMU Classic at Galen Center on Thursday, Sept. 12

KEY PLAYERS

Sr. S Mia Tuaniga recorded her second double-double of the season (30th of her career) with 27 assists and 12 digs. Tuaniga also had three service aces in the match—her 16th-career contest with three or more aces.
Gr. OH Ally Batenhorst led the Trojans with 13.5 points gained on 11 kills (3e, 25att) and .320 hitting with three blocks and a service ace to go with four digs on defense.
Jr. LIB Gala Trubint had eight digs and three assists.
Redshirt So. OPP Adonia Faumuina scored eight kills on 13 swings without an error to hit .615 and added five blocks to finish with 10.5 points.
Redshirt Jr. MB Tyrah Ariail led all players with seven blocks.
For the Aggies, Adna Mehmedovic led with seven kills. Jagoda Bialek led all players with 13 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

USC out-hit Utah State, .267 to negative .034, had more kills than the Aggies, 37-20, and had the edge in blocks, 12-8. The Trojans also had more digs, 32-31, and more service aces, 5-4.
The Trojans hit .276, put up five blocks and had 15 digs to hold the Aggies to negative .056 hitting in a 25-12 first-set win. USC got three kills apiece from London Wijay, Favor Anyanwu and Batenhorst and were paced on defense by five digs from Tuaniga. Tuaniga also had one of two service aces. Grae Gosnell had the other.
Batenhorst racked up six kills in the second set and served one of the Trojans' two aces to help USC roll to a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-20 win. USC had four more blocks to hold the Aggies to a negative .037 hitting rate. Tuaniga dug up five more balls to cement her double-double while Faumuina tallied three of her kills in the frame.
USC led from wire to wire in set three to complete the sweep with a 25-19 win. The Trojans hit .344 with 15 kills in the final frame and held the Aggies to a .000 attack rate with six kills (6e) on 25 swings. Freshman OH Jadyn Livings entered the match and collected four of her five kills to finish with a .375 hitting rate.

UP NEXT

The Trojans close out the USC/LMU Classic tournament at Galen Center against Ohio (3-2) on Friday (Sept. 13). The match is set for a 7 p.m. PT start and will be carried live on Big Ten Plus (B1G+).

MATCH NOTES

USC improved to 9-1 all-time against Utah State and have won all nine matches in a row.
The Trojans got their first win in Galen Center this season and improved to 205-56 all-time in the arena.
Utah State's negative hitting percentage was the lowest by a USC opponent since the Trojans held Rider to a negative .013 percentage on Aug. 29, 2014.
