LOS ANGELES – The USC Baseball program announced this week the promotion of Sergio Brown to assistant coach, as well as the hiring of Josh Goossen-Brown as Director of Player Development, and Grant Kastelan as Director of Baseball Sports Performance.
Sergio Brown enters his fourth season with the Trojans after serving as the program's Director of Player Development for his first three seasons in Los Angeles. Brown brings over 30 years of coaching experience to the Trojans' staff, and has reached nine NCAA Regionals, six NCAA Super Regionals, and five CWS appearances as a coach and player. Brown won a national championship as an infielder on Cal State Fullerton's 1995 team. Brown is no stranger to his new role as assistant coach, having played the role at San Diego State (2022), Cal State Fullerton (2008-2010, 2020-21), Arizona (2016-19), Cal State Northridge (2013), UCSD (2012), and UC Irvine (2004-2007).
Goossen-Brown joins the Trojans staff after working with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, where he was the pitching coach for Single-A Visalia Rawhide. Before his stop in Visalia, the Notre Dame High School alum was the pitching coach at Los Angeles Valley College. Goossen-Brown made stops as a player at Los Angeles Valley College, Cal State Northridge, and the University of San Diego. Winning numerous awards at LAVC, his success continued at CSUN, where he led the team both offensively and defensively as a junior in 2013, finishing third in the Big West in RBIs. As a pitcher, Goossen-Brown currently sits in 4th place all-time for the Matadors in career saves (14) and single-season saves (9). As a senior, he played at the University of San Diego, hitting .314, and had 55 hits, 10 doubles, 2 triples, and 4 homeruns. As the Toreros' closer, Goossen-Brown pitched to a 1.55 ERA in 18 appearances out of the bullpen. After his impressive senior season, Gossen-Brown was drafted in the 31st round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Chicago White Sox. He played two seasons in the minors with the Great Falls Voyagers and the AZL White Sox.
Grant Kastelan enters his first season with USC after spending four seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers' AA affiliate Biloxi Shuckers as the team's strength and conditioning specialist. Prior to his four years with Biloxi, he spent four years at Appalachian State working as the strength and conditioning coach for the baseball, women's basketball, and women's tennis programs. He completed a graduate assistant position at Lindenwood University, where he worked with multiple sports, including baseball. Kastelan has also completed internships with the Notre Dame football program, the Ohio State Olympic strength and conditioning team, and at Pepperdine.
