February 01, 2025 | Men's Tennis
The Trojans won the doubles point, but dropped four of the five singles matches in the 4-2 loss
LOS ANGELES – USC men's tennis fell short of an upset bid against former conference-mate, No. 13 Stanford, as it dropped the first match of its three-match weekend, 4-2, on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
The Trojans won the initial doubles point against the Cardinal before dropping four of the five singles matches, including three three-set matches. Senior Peter Makk was the lone USC athlete to win his singles match, taking down No. 35 Samir Banerjee 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
USC's doubles teams were the stars of the afternoon as they clinched the point against Stanford. The No. 1 team of graduate student Tristan Bradley and Makk earned the first win for the Trojans, 6-4, as the No. 3 team of sophomore Volodymyr Iakubenko and Oscar Weightman clinched the point. The pairing of Iakubenko and Weightman is now 3-0 for the season, as they overcame a 5-6 deficit to win in a tiebreak 7-6 (3).
The Trojans' singles play did not go as well. They played out most of the matches until the third set. Makk was the only one to win, as he took home his third-ranked win of the season.
USC returns to the courts tomorrow. They have a doubleheader planned with California and UNLV starting at noon, with the following match happening at 4:00 p.m.
