January 31, 2025 | Men's Tennis
The Trojans put their 3-1 record on the line, as they bring in No. 13 Stanford, California and UNLV for their second home stand
LOS ANGELES – USC men's tennis (3-1) returns home this weekend and will take on a loaded three-match slate as its season kicks into high gear, starting with No. 13 Stanford (3-1) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1. Following that will be a doubleheader with California (4-0) and UNLV (4-0) at 12:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2 at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium.
It will be a tough battle for the Trojans, who will face a slew of ranked singles competitors, including No. 4 Carl Emil Overbeck (Cal), No. 32 Theo Dean (Cal), No. 35 Samir Banerjee (Stanford), and No. 66 Alex Chang (Cal). On the doubles side, the Cardinals have the No. 36 squad, Nicholas Godsick, and Banerjee, while the Golden Bears have No. 30 Dean and Emil Overbeck, as well as No. 84 Chang and Michael Wright.
The Trojans have shown early signs of life this year, opening the season with back-to-back wins over UC Irvine, 6-0, and San Diego State, 7-0, before falling to No. 6 Arizona, 4-0, in the first round of ITA Kickoff Weekend. However, USC bounced back in the consolation round, sweeping Oklahoma State, 4-0, to improve to 3-1.
Sophomore Volodymyr Iakubenko starred at ITA Kickoff Weekend for the first time on the court during the 2024-25 year. Iakubenko had a lead in his first match against Arizona's Casper Christensen before play was paused, and he swept his OSU opponent the next day. He was also 2-0 in doubles play with partner Oscar Weightman.
Saturday's match-up with No. 13 Stanford will begin at 1 p.m. at David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. The action will continue Sunday when the Trojans tip off against Cal at noon, followed by their match against UNLV at 4 p.m.
