IRVINE, Calif. – The USC baseball team nearly erased an eight-run deficit, but couldn't come all the way back against Gonzaga on Thursday night, falling 9-6 to the Zags.

USC falls to 23-14 overall with the loss, while Gonzaga improves to 18-15.

Gonzaga's Finbar O'Brien took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before the Trojan offense was able to break through. Adrian Lopez broke up the no-no with a leadoff triple and he would later score on a double by Andrew Lamb. USC loaded the bases and got sacrifice flies from Kevin Takeuchi and Kade Higgins.

USC came right back with three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a two-run game. The first run came in on a Gonzaga error and then Abbrie Covarrubias hit a sacrifice fly and Augie Lopez singled home the third run to make it 8-6.

Ben Cushnie put up 2.0 scoreless innings while the Trojans made a game of it, setting the side down in order in both the top of the sixth and seventh innings. Grant Govel worked a scoreless eighth inning, getting out of a jam with two groundouts to strand runners on second and third.

The Trojans put a pair of runners on to start the bottom of the eighth, but they were stranded after a failed sacrifice attempt and two flyouts. Gonzaga's Mikey Bell would hit a solo-homer in the ninth to cap the scoring on the day.
