USC Men’s Tennis Upsets No. 6 San Diego to Secure Spot in NCAA Super Regionals

The Trojans bested the Toreros, 4-2, in the eight-hour affair
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – USC men's tennis (16-10) pulled the upset in an eight-hour affair, taking down No. 6-seeded San Diego (25-4), 4-2, to advance into the NCAA Super Regionals Sunday, May 4 at the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
The Trojans battled in one of the season's most tightly contested doubles points, as two of the three matches had to be decided by an extra game. The freshmen pairing of Nathan Trouve and Connor Church earned their second-straight victory in the postseason with a 6-4 win to kick things off. From there, it was a lot of back and forth, as the Toreros claimed court No. 2 before taking home court No. 1 honors for the doubles point.
USC entered singles play with a disadvantage and would further go down in the hole, as USD won court No. 4, making it 2-0 in its favor. Senior Karl Lee would be the first to stop the leak, posting a point on court No. 5 with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win. That change in the score would signal a shift in momentum for the match, as the dual would come to a screeching halt.
As the Trojans scored their first point of the afternoon, the rain would follow suit to delay play. The tennis match would stop roughly around 3:30 p.m. and stay that way until it resumed play at 7:30 p.m. Four hours later, the Trojans had all the momentum, as Trouve and junior Oscar Weightman were only a few games away from earning points for the Trojans. Trouve was the first to score out of the break with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory, and Weightman would follow with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 win to make the score 3-2 in favor of USC.
The final match of the night would come down to freshman Matteo Morazzi. Morazzi dropped his first set on court No. 6 but found a second gear in the latter half as he would win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. This was Morazzi's second clinch of the season, as his first was back in February against UNLV.
USC will have a date with a familiar rival at the NCAA Super Regionals as it will face UCLA for the third time this season at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 9, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in Westwood.
