LOS ANGELES – Terry Dedeaux, the son of legendary USC baseball coach Rod Dedeaux and member of USC's 1972 and 1973 NCAA Championship teams, died at the age of 74 on Wednesday, June 25.
Dedeaux, who also coached for a short time at USC before going on to a long and successful career in logistics, passed away from complications of Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
After growing up in Glendale, Calif. and attending St. Francis HS, Dedeaux attended USC and was a member of the 1972 and '73 Trojan baseball teams, helping USC win back-to-back College World Series Championships. The two titles were a part of the Trojans' legendary run of five straight NCAA titles from 1970-74, a feat which has still not been replicated.
Dedeaux played second base for USC both seasons before forgoing his senior year of eligibility due to an injury. He quickly transitioned into coaching, serving as the co-manager of the Spartan baseball squad, which at the time was the name of the JV team at USC. He coached the Spartan team alongside Daryl Arenstein in 1974 and 1975.
Dedeaux began working in the family business, Dart Entities, when he was 15 years old, and after graduating from USC he operated a small local trucking business (Commercial Transfer) for five years. Soon after, he became President and a member of Dart's Executive Committee and a Board Member. In the ensuing years, he was responsible for the tremendous growth in Dart's trucking and equipment leasing operations throughout the country. In 2005, Dedeaux was elected Chairman and CEO of Dart Entities.
In addition to his success in the world of business, Dedeaux remained a strong supporter of the USC baseball program and USC Athletics. Dedeaux actively supported the Trojan Baseball Alumni Association, as well as a multitude of different projects and priorities over the last several decades, including scholarship funds, the Trojan Athletic Fund and several facilities projects, including both the old and new Dedeaux Fields and the Coliseum. Terry and his siblings, Justin and Michele, have played a key role in the design of the new Dedeaux Field, which is scheduled to open in 2026.
Dedeaux is survived by his wife Christine of 45 years, daughter Galyn Medlin and husband Joseph, son Anthony and wife Lindsay, son Adam and wife Casey, son Patrick, and eight grandchildren. Services will be held July 16 at 1 p.m. at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Huntington Beach (16400 Springdale Street, Huntington Beach, CA 92649).
