LOS ANGELES – The 19th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (7-1) collected a four-set win (25-20, 30-28, 17-25, 25-17) over LSU (6-3) at Galen Center on Thursday, Sept. 18.

KEY PLAYERS

Sr. MB Rylie McGinest scored a season-high nine kills (1e, 20att) and hit .400. She also put up a career-high eight blocks to total 13.0 points.
RS So. OH London Wijay had eight kills (3e, 22att, .227) to go with 13 digs and added a pair of assists.
Fr. S Reese Messer dished out 42 assists and added seven digs. She also had four kills, four blocks, and three service aces to close the night with nine points.
RS Fr. OH Brooklyn Tealer put up nine kills (2e, 33att, .212) with four digs and four blocks.
Fr. LIB Taylor Deckert had a team-high 14 digs.
Fr. OPP Abigail Mullen scored eight kills and had 12 digs, four blocks, and three service aces to post 13.0 points.
RS So. MB Leah Ford racked eight kills (1e, 20att) to hit .350 and had four blocks and three digs for 10.0 points.
For the Tigers Jurnee Robinson did it all with 21 kills and 17 digs for a double-double and added four blocks (one solo). Jessica Jones finished with 11 kills (0e) on 16 swings to hit .688 and had a team-high seven blocks. Takyla Brown put up 24 assists and had 10 digs for a double-double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Trojans and Tigers were deadlocked at 15-all to mark the seventh tie of the opening set before USC rolled through a 4-0 run bookended by blocks that did the trick to claim a 25-20 win. Mullen had three of her kills in the first set while Wijay, Ford, and McGinest each collected two kills apiece. Wijay had four of the Trojans' digs and Mullen tacked on three points from the service line.
USC led set two by as many as five at 21-16 on a service ace by Messer but the Tigers roared through a 9-3 run to equalize at 24-all, the set's first tie since a seven-all knot. The score was tied four more times and the Trojans fought off two LSU set points before sealing a 30-28 win for a 2-0 lead in the match. Wijay racked up five of her kills in the second while Mullen, Tealer, and McGinest added a form-fitting three kills each to help USC hit .250 (15k, 5e, 40att).
The Tigers collected a 25-17 win in set three after logging six blocks to hold USC to a negative .027 hitting rate (7k, 8e, 37att). Tealer had two kills for the Trojans, but five others had only one apiece in the set. Robinson registered seven digs in the third and added five kills to lead LSU on both offense and defense.
The Trojans seized control of the fourth with an 8-0 run that had USC up 11-3. A trio of kills from Tealer, Messer, and Ford put the Women of Troy on top by nine, 14-5. Messer doled out 11 assists and guided the Trojans to a .364 hitting percentage (13k, 1e) on 33 attacks. Five USC blocks put the Trojans on a looting spree that held the Tiger attack to .070 (12k, 9e) on 43 swings. Decker had seven digs in the fourth set alone while Mullen added five digs to her final total.

UP NEXT

USC and LSU return to the Galen Center floor on Friday (Sept. 19) with the responsibility of a rematch at 7 p.m. PT that will be shown on a Big Ten Plus stream. The Trojans then have a day between before taking on California (3-5) on Sunday (Sept. 21) for a 2 p.m. match that will be carried nationally on Big Ten Network.

MATCH NOTES

USC improved to 3-1 all-time against LSU and faced the Tigers for the first time since 1992.
The Trojans improved to 5-0 at home this season and move to 221-60 all-time at Galen Center.
