LOS ANGELES—USC punter Lachlan Carrigan has been named to the Ray Guy Award Midseason Watch List, today (Nov. 5). Named for football's premier punter, the Ray Guy Award honors the nation's top collegiate punter in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
Carrigan, from Melbourne, Australia, is averaging 48.7 yards on 17 punts this season, a mark that would rank fifth nationally among the listed leaders, though he does not meet the leaderboard's minimum 3.6 punts-per-game requirement.
Eight of Carrigan's punts have traveled at least 50 yards. Six have pinned opponents inside their own 20, 5 at or inside the 10, 3 at or inside the 5 with 1 punt at the 1 against Washington.
He has averaged over 50-yards in 3 games this season (50.0 versus Louisiana, 56.0 versus Rutgers and 52.5 versus Penn State).
Carrigan has been instrumental in flipping the field and giving the Trojan defense great field position all season long.
He also handles holding duties for the Trojans.
Nominees were evaluated on their overall statistics with an emphasis on net punting average, percentage of punts inside the 20, and percentage of punts not returned.
The Ray Guy Award Committee will determine the ten semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award. The semifinalists will be revealed on November 13.
Three finalists will be selected by a national voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision sports information directors, media representatives, and previous Ray Guy Award winners. After the finalists are announced, the voting body will cast ballots again to select the nation's top punter. The winner of the Ray Guy Award will be announced live during The Home Depot College Football Awards on December 11.
