No. 14 USC Baseball Sweeps Iowa with 8-2 Victory
April 12, 2026 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES – The No. 14 USC baseball team finished off a sweep of Iowa with an 8-2 victory on Sunday afternoon at Dedeaux Field, getting an early offensive explosion and six strong innings on the mound from Andrew Johnson.
The three-game sweep improves USC to 30-7 overall on the year and 13-5 in Big Ten play. Iowa falls to 18-15, 5-10. The Trojans' 30th victory of the year marks the fourth straight season under Head Coach Andy Stankiewicz that USC has had 30 or more wins, the first such streak since 1999-2002 under Hall of Fame Manager Mike Gillespie.
Johnson gave up a leadoff home run before settling in and working five scoreless innings to move to 3-1 on the year with the win. The sophomore righty faced just four batters over the minimum after the first batter of the game, allowing just four total hits and one walk. The USC defense turned two double plays as well.
The Trojan bats wasted no time erasing the 1-0 deficit, getting a three-run homer from Augie Lopez and a two-run shot from Isaac Cadena to put up five runs in the bottom of the first. Maddox Riske had a solo-home run and Kevin Takeuchi an RBI single to give USC a 7-1 lead in the second inning.
Takeuchi, Lopez and Cadena all had multiple RBI in the game, and Riske and Takeuchi each had two-hit days.
Diego Velazquez recorded the next five outs on the mound after Johnson exited, with Sax Matson getting the final out of the eighth and Ben Cushnie tossing a scoreless ninth. Cushnie struck out two in the ninth, including the final batter of the game.
After Iowa came into the series averaging 8.0 runs per game, the Hawkeyes scored just seven runs total in the three-game set.
The sweep was the sixth of the season for USC and the eighth overall series win for the Trojans.
