USC will take on the Crusaders in a regional first-round match at Bankoh Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawai'i, on Friday, May 1, at 8 p.m. PT (5 p.m. local time). The winner will advance to meet site host Hawai'i (27-5) in the regional final (a quarterfinal nationally). The regional final is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT (4 p.m. HT) on Saturday, May 2. The Rainbow Warriors were the Big West runner-up and are the second seed in the 12-team tournament. The winner of the regional final will move on to the final four set to be played at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles, May 9 and 11.
MPSF champion UCLA (29-1) earned the No. 1 overall seed and will host UC Irvine (18-8) and EIVA champion Penn State (22-7) at Pauley Pavilion. The third seed went to Big West champion Long Beach State (24-4) who will host Loyola Chicago (20-8) and NEC champion Saint Francis (18-11) at the Pyramid. MIVA champion Ball State (24-4) earned the fourth seed and will host Pepperdine (23-6) and SIAC champion Fort Valley State (16-12).
The Trojans finished as the runner-up for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's championship on Saturday night (April 25). USC was the third-seeded team in the conference tourney and fell to top-seeded UCLA in a narrow four-set decision. The Men of Troy are the owners of six national titles (1949 and 1950 USCVBA champions) including four NCAA crowns won in 1977, 1980, 1988, and 1990. USC is 17-11 all-time in NCAA tournament matches and last recorded a win in the national tourney against Lewis in 2012. The last time the Trojans played in the tourney, they were defeated by Lewis in four sets in the opening round (April 30, 2019).
