USC Baseball Falls in Super Regional Final to North Carolina, 4-3
June 07, 2026 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The USC baseball team's season came to a heartbreaking end on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill as North Carolina scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Trojans 4-3 and advance to the College World Series.
The loss came despite a stellar outing on the mound by Andrew Johnson, who held the Tar Heels in check through 7.2 innings of work.
USC scored in the first and then after North Carolina tied it in the third, Kevin Takeuchi hit a solo shot in the fourth to put the Trojans back in front. Andrew Lamb would add to the USC lead with a solo home run of his own in the fifth.
The 3-1 advantage lasted until the eighth, when UNC finally got to Johnson for back-to-back doubles to make it 3-2. With Johnson out of the game, the Tar Heels tied it on a sacrifice fly and then Owen Hull doubled off the wall to plate the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
USC finishes the year 48-18, having made the program's first Super Regional in more than 20 years. The Trojans' 48 wins were the most by a USC team since 1998, when the team went 49-17 and won the program's last NCAA title.
In four years under Head Coach Andy Stankiewicz, USC has made noticeable improvements every season. In his first campaign at the helm, Stankiewicz helped USC go from a last place Pac-12 finish to fourth in the conference and 34 wins overall, the most by a Trojan team since 2015. USC again posted a 30+ win season and a fourth-place conference finish in 2024, making a run to the Pac-12 title game and narrowly missing the NCAA postseason for the second straight year. 2025 saw USC return to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 10 years, as USC won 37 games and reached the final of the Corvallis Regional.
This season, USC won 40 games for the first time since 2005 and won the College Station Regional to advance to the Super Regional round for the first time since that same 2005 season.
