USC Track and Field’s Garrett Kaalund and Alum Anna Cockrell Win USATF Outdoor Championship Titles

NEW YORK — USC Track and Field alumni shined through four days of USATF Outdoor Championships at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island. Garrett Kaalund put the shield out front to secure his first 200m national title while alum Anna Cockrell won her first title as well in the 400m hurdles.
Kaalund returned healthy to the track on Saturday for his first complete race since sitting out much of the NCAA season due to injury. In preliminary 200m rounds, both Garrett Kaalund (20.46) and alum Max Thomas (20.70) moved through to the next round. On the women's side, recent graduate Christine Mallard advanced to the 200m final with a time of 22.98.
In Sunday's final rounds, Kaalund secured the men's 200m win with a time of 20.04 while Max Thomas earned the bronze medal in 20.29. In the women's 200m, Christine Mallard placed ninth in her first ever USATF final with a time of 22.96.
In the women's 400m hurdles, Anna Cockrell and Daliliah Muhammad both won their heats to advance to Sunday's final. Cockrell pulled ahead from the start, dominating the field to achieve her first gold medal at USATF championships in a time of 52.94.
A total of seven Trojan alumni finished in the top-8 of their respective events. In the men's 110m hurdles, Johnny Brackins came away with fifth place in a new personal-best time of 13.26. Allie Jones finished seventh in the heptathlon, scoring 5745 points. Johnnie Blockburger finished in the top-8 in the men's 400m in 45.96.
More Trojans will be in action throughout the week, representing their countries at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland. More information is available here.
