LOS ANGELES – The 19th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (5-4) dropped a three-set decision (25-12, 25-20, 25-17) to Pepperdine (8-3) at Galen Center on Saturday, Sept. 19.

KEY PLAYERS

RS Jr. London Wijay led the Trojans with 10.0 points earned on nine kills and a service ace to go with six digs.
Fr. S Milly McGee put up 11 assists and had six digs and one block.
Fr. MB Taliyah Hanks led the team with six blocks and knocked down a pair of kills to go with a dig.
Jr. MB Mia Tvrdy tallied six kills and had three digs and three blocks (one solo).
Fr. OH Riley Malloy had four kills, five digs, and two blocks.
For the Waves, Chloe Pravednikov led with 11 kills and added five digs. Laine Briigs led all players with 16 digs and added four assists. Maggie Beauer had eight kills and five blocks. Ryan Gilhooly put up 11 digs and had three service aces.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Pepperdine collected six blocks and held USC to a negative .086 hitting rate to claim set one, 25-12. The Waves also scored four aces and had 10 kills (3e, 27att) to hit .259 in the win. Wijay had three kills but no one else had more than one. On defense, the Trojans had two blocks and out-dug Pepperdine, 13-11.
The Trojans never led and were only able to tie the Waves six times as Pepperdine went up, 2-0, with a 25-20 win in the second set. USC had 13 kills (7e) on 42 swings to hit .143. Both teams had 18 digs apiece, but Pepperdine posted 15 kills (4e) on 38 attempts to hit .289. Loper and Wijay each had four kills to lead the USC attack, which was tied at 12-all before Pepperdine pulled away to take the set win.
The Waves rolled to the sweep with a 25-17 win in the third. The Trojans had six blocks to hold Pepperdine to .024 hitting (9k, 8e) on 41 swings but were outhit with seven kills (10e, 38att, -.079). USC out-dug the Waves, 19-17, but was outdone in every other statistical category.

UP NEXT

USC concludes its nonconference schedule with a match against UC Santa Barbara (4-6) on Sunday (Sept. 20) at 2 p.m. Both matches will be shown live on Big Ten Plus.

MATCH NOTES

USC falls to 41-9 all-time against Pepperdine and had an eight-match win streak over the Waves stopped.
The Trojans fall to 3-2 in three-set matches.
USC goes to 234-66 all-time at Galen Center.
