The Trojans were led by nine-kill performances from both London Wijay and Abigail Mullen

SAN DIEGO – The 15th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (2-2) collected a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-13, 25-21) of San Diego (2-3) in the Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic at Jenny Craig Pavilion on Sunday, Sept. 6.

KEY PLAYERS

So. OPP Abigail Mullen put up nine kills and led the Trojans in scoring with 11.5 points. She also had six digs, three blocks, a service ace and an assist.
RS Jr. OH London Wijay had 11.0 points and scored those on nine kills, two blocks, and an ace, to go with six digs.
RS Jr. MB Leah Ford hit .417 with seven kills (2e, 12att) and had a season-high seven digs to go with a block and an ace.
Jr. S Lilli Etter dished out 27 assists and had six digs, two blocks, and a kill.
Jr. MB Mia Tvrdy led all players with six blocks and added five kills and three digs to total 8.0 points.
So. LIB Taylor Deckert had a season-high 15 digs to go with a pair of assists.
RS Sr. Adonia Faumuina tallied seven kills (1e, 18att) to hit .333 and added four digs and two blocks (one solo).
For the Toreros, Nemo Beach and Kierstyn Barton each had seven kills apiece but Beach hit .065 and Barton was held to .071. Lauren Lynch had 14 digs and a pair of assists. Kylie Munday had 23 assists and nine digs. Beach reached 1,000-career kills during the course of the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED

USC outscored San Diego, 49.5 to 31.0, and totaled more kills (38-28), more assists (36-26), more digs (49-42), and more blocks (8.5-1.0) than the Toreros. The Trojans also had more aces (3-2) and hit at a .206 clip to USD's .061.
The Trojans pulled away to lead set one by as many as five points on several occasions, but San Diego shaved off every point but one at 24-23 on Beach's fourth kill. Wijay came back on the next rally to log her seventh kill of the set and secured the 25-23 win. USC hit .275 in the opening frame with 16 kills (5e) on 40 swings. Ford added four kills and Mullen had three in the first. The Trojans had a pair of early blocks and totaled 17 digs (five from Deckert) to hold the Toreros to .190 hitting (13k, 5e) on 42 attempts.
After eight ties in the second set, the Trojans cruised to a 25-13 win behind a 10-0 run with Wijay at the service line. Tied at 11-all, Tvrdy's block of Barton put USC ahead for good. The Toreros scored their last point on a hitting error by Wijay, but her unstoppable service run included three kills from Faumuina—who had five kills in the set—and back-to-back blocks by Tvrdy to end it. The Trojans hit .290 in set two and collected 13 kills (4e) on 31 attacks to go with three blocks to hold USD to a .000 hitting rate with six kills and six errors on 30 attacks.
San Diego grabbed an early lead in the third set and led by as many as four at 6-2, but USC stayed the course to force the teams into a back-and-forth battle until the Trojans went ahead, 12-11, and stayed on top for good. The Women of Troy built a six-point lead, 22-16, but the Toreros had one last charge in them to pull within a point at 22-21 on a 5-0 burst. USC responded with a kill from Ford and then a block by Ford and Faumuina to shut the door on a 25-21 win. The Trojans had just nine kills in the third but picked up three more blocks and had a service ace in the clinching frame.

UP NEXT

USC will play its first home match next week and hosts its next six contests at Galen Center. Three former Pac-12 (one still current) opponents visit for the upcoming weekend as the Women of Troy start with Arizona on Friday (Sept. 11). The Trojans and the Wildcats meet for a 7 p.m. PT match that will be shown live on Big Ten Network. USC then hosts Colorado on Saturday evening (Sept. 12) for a 6 p.m. matchup; then concludes the weekend against Oregon State on Sunday (Sept. 13) with a 2 p.m. matinee contest. The matches against the Buffalo and the Beavers will be shown on Big Ten Plus.

MATCH NOTES

USC improved to 15-4 all-time against San Diego—2-2 as the visiting team—and has won three straight matches against the Toreros. It is the Trojans' first win over USD as the visitor since a 3-0 victory in 2018.
The Trojans faced their first unranked foe of the season; previously No. 12 ASU, No. 13 Creighton, and No. 9 Texas.
USC moves to 48-13-1 al-time in the city of San Diego.
The Trojans go to 2-1 in three-set matches this season.
