High School: Mertz prepped at Santa Rosa (Calif.) High where he was a two-time finalist at the 2019 California CIF North Coast Section Championships, finishing second in the 500y free (4:24.71) and sixth in the 200y free (1:40.53) … He was a finalist at the California CIF North Coast Section Championship in 2016 and 2017 in the 500y free … He was a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American and an NISCA All-American.

- Mertz repeated as a conference B finalist at Pac-12’s, finishing 12th in the 1650y free (PR - 15:20.76) and 21st in the 500y free (4:28.90 / 4:27.40).
- Won the 1650y free in a then personal best 15:37.54 against Utah (Feb. 12).
- Named to the Pac-12 Winter Academic Honor Roll.
- Second-Team CSCAA Scholar All-American
2020:
- Reached conference B finals at Pac-12s, finishing 11th in the 1650y free in 15:10.75. He was also 32nd in the 500y free (4:28.05) and 45th in the 200y free (1:41.91) at the Pac-12 Championships.
- At the Art Adamson Invite, Mertz was 11th in the 500y free (4:25.38) and 24th in the 200y free, posting a season best 1:41.60.
