LOS ANGELES - Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Arase made six saves to help the USC women's soccer team to a school-record third consecutive shutout, as the No. 11 Women of Troy defeated Arizona State, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at McAlister Field in a Pacific-10 Conference match.
The Women of Troy improved to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-10. The Sun Devils fell to 7-4, 1-2.
"If we had finished some more of our opportunities, it would have been over at halftime," USC Coach Jim Millinder said. "But our players did well, even though it was a very hot day and they got tired. Lauren Arase was very good, and our defense is doing a great job of not conceding goals. Arizona State is a good team and they'll have a say in who wins the conference."
Both USC goals were scored early. In the seventh minute, freshman midfielder Ali Fennell (Santa Ana/Mater Dei HS) made a run up the right sideline and into the middle. Her pass was taken by senior midfielder Kim Clark (Cupertino/Monta Vista HS), who dribbled once to her right and blasted a shot from 20 yards out inside the left post.
In the 17th minute, Arizona State was called for a handball in the penalty box, and junior midfielder Isabelle Harvey (Quebec, Canada) converted the penalty kick for a 2-0 lead.
From that point on, both goalkeepers excelled. ASU junior Erin Reinke made 10 saves in the loss. Arase (La Canada/La Canada HS), who is 4-0 as a starter, has a goals-against average of 0.553.
The Sun Devils' best chance may have come in the 58th minute, when after a corner kick, junior defender Shanel Scott's long shot was headed off the line by USC junior defensive midfielder Katie Ticehurst (Los Alamitos/Mater Dei HS).
USC closes out its home schedule next weekend against Washington (Oct. 15) at Washington State (Oct. 17).
