Pac-10 Women's Golf Championship Underway

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Calif.-- Arizona sophomore Jenna Daniels fired a 3-under-par 69 in the first round of the 12th Annual Pacific-10 Conference Women's Golf Championship, leading the Wildcats to a team total of 290 (2-over-par), six shots better than second-place Arizona State (296). Daniels' round of 69 was the only one played under par for the day and it set a new women's record at Tijera's Creek Golf Club (par 72, 6,120 yards).
No. 3-ranked Arizona, the defending Pac-10 champion, is seeking to win its third tournament of the season (the Sun Devils previously won the Rolex NCAA Preview and Rolex Match Play). The Wildcats played consistently well as a team, having all five golfers shoot 74 or better and place within the Top 5.
No. 2-ranked Arizona State, which has won four Pac-10 titles and three NCAA championships in the '90's, was led by Jeanne-Marie Busutti (72) and Kellee Booth (74).
Host USC finished the first round in third place (302), led by senior Ida Danielsson and freshman Jennifer Rosales, who each shot 74.
Daniels, Busuttil and Stanford freshman Hilary Homeyer (72) were the only players to shoot par or better in the first round, which was played under sunny skies.
The 54-hole tournament continues with another round tomorrow (first tee time -- 9:02 a.m.) and concludes on Wednesday (first tee time -- 8:06 a.m.).
