Trojans Fall to No. 1 BYU

LOS ANGELES -Ossie Antonetti had 17 kills and 7 digs to help the No. 1-ranked BYU men's volleyball team remain undefeated as it beat No. 11 USC, 9-15, 15-9, 15-8, 15-5 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (March 6) in the USC North Gym.
BYU improved to 16-0 overall and 12-0 in the MPSF, while USC fell to 7-7 and 6-6. It was the Trojans' sixth loss in their last seven games, including a 3-game home loss to No. 2 Pepperdine last Tuesday (March 2), after opening the 1999 season with a 6-1 record.
Rich Lambourne also had 17 kills for the Cougars, while Ryan Millar added 16.
For USC, Brook Billings, Eli Fairfield, and Craig Dennis all scored a match-high 18 kills. Omar Rawi added 7 digs and 8 blocks.
BYU rebounded from a one-game deficit to take the final three games while hitting .378 and totaling 22 blocks and 30 digs. USC hit .244 for the match and recorded 42 errors to the Cougars' 27.
USC's next match is on Tuesday (March 9) against No. 13 Loyola of Chicago. The Trojans then travel to UC Santa Barbara on Thursday (March 11) for an MPSF match.
