STANFORD, Calif. - Leila Chartrand shot a 2-under-par 70 to lead all golfers after the first round of the 1999 Pac-10 women's golf championship at Stanford Golf Course, helping her No. 5-ranked Women of Troy squad to second place at 296, just 5 strokes behind the No. 10-ranked host Cardinal.
Five strokes behind the Trojans in third place (at 301) is No. 6 Arizona State. Two-time defending Pac-10 champ Arizona, the nation's No. 2 team, is in fifth place at 305, 14 strokes behind Stanford.
Chartrand, a freshman from Canada, holds a one-stroke lead over Stanford's Hilary Homeyer. Arizona State's Grace Park and Stanford's Julie Dunn are tied for third after shooting an even par 72.
USC junior Linda Ishii is tied with four others in seventh at +2 (74), while sophomore teammate Jennifer Rosales--the defending NCAA champion who is currently ranked third in the nation--shot a 3-over 75 and is tied for 12th. Seniors Johanna Josefsson (77, +5) and Alison Czetli (84, +12) round out the Women of Troy's contingent.
Arizona's Jenna Daniels, last year's Pac-10 individual champion, is tied for 35th after shooting a 79, 9 strokes behind Chartrand.
