LOS ANGELES - Trojan senior Jorge Corral has qualified for the 1999 NCAA Division I Mens Golf Championships, which will be held June 2-5 at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.
Thirty teams (five players per school) plus six individuals have advanced from the initial 324 participants who were selected to participate at the three regional tournaments conducted May 20-22.
Corral, the top individual qualifier from the West, shot a 218 (73-74-71) to finish in a tie for 13th at the NCAA West Regional held in Tucson, Ariz. The Wests other individual qualifier is Justin Peters of Nevada.
This will be Corrals third appearance at the NCAA Championships, having competed with the entire USC mens golf team in 1996 (USC finished ninth) and 1997 (14th).
He was also recently honored with his third consecutive All-Pac-10 selection.
Corral is USCs most experienced player, having played in 43 team tournaments for the Trojans during his four-year career. He has been a key component on each of those squads. As a senior this season, he provided a great deal of leadership for Troys young team while leading the squad with a stroke average of 73.5.
A native of Tijuana, Mexico, Corral had to drive across the Mexican border every day to go to high school in San Diego at St. Augustine, where he was a two-time MVP, two-time all-CIF performer and named the "Player of the Year" by the SDCJG Association. He came to Troy fresh off an outstanding performance at the Southern California Amateur, where he fired a 63 on the way to finishing second.
