LOS ANGELES - Three Trojans -- sophomore C Beau Craig, junior 1B Bill Peavey and senior 3B Justin Gemoll -- hit home runs in USC's 2000 home opener to lead the No. 11 Trojans, 8-1, over No. 26 Pepperdine in a non-conference game on Sunday afternoon at Dedeaux Field.
USC improved to 2-0 on the season. Pepperdine fell to 0-2 overall.
The Trojans jumped out to a 5-0 start with Craig's three-run home run in the second and Peavey's two-run homer in the third. USC added another run in the fifth when freshman 2B Anthony Lunetta's double scored sophomore CF Brian Barre from second. Gemoll hit a two-run homer in the eighth to complete the scoring for the Trojans.
Pepperdine's lone run came in the fourth on three straight singles by sophomore LF Woody Cliffords, freshman 3B Duke Sardinha and junior C Dane Sardinha.
Junior RHP Rik Currier (1-0) started for the Trojans and went five innings, giving up four hits, one run and two walks while striking out eight. Freshman RHP Anthony Reyes picked up his first collegiate save by pitching the final four innings of the game. Reyes shut out the Waves and allowed only four hits and no walks while striking out four in his first collegiate appearance.
Pepperdine starter, junior RHP Jay Adams (0-1),who was taken out after two innings because of a pitch count, took the loss for the Waves.
The Trojans swept the two game series with the Waves over the weekend.
USC's next game is against Long Beach State at Dedeaux Field on Friday (Feb. 4) at 5 p.m.
