LUBBOCK, Tex. - A bases-loaded walk to third baseman Eric McLamore by sophomore Pete Montrenes (Fountain Valley/Ocean View HS) capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning as Texas Tech defeated No. 6 USC, 4-3, in the first game of a three-game series. Sophomore pitcher Mark Prior (Bonita/Vanderbilt University) was the hard-luck loser for the Trojans (4-2), going eight and 1/3 innings as he scattered three hits. All four runs given up by Prior against the Red Raiders (5-1) were all unearned.
Center fielder Marco Cunningham led off the ninth for Texas Tech by reaching first on an error by USC right fielder Rob Garibaldi (Petaluma/Santa Rosa College). After Miles Durham lined out to center, Shaun Larkin hit a ground ball which bounced off first baseman Alberto Concepcion?s glove and into right field. With runners on first and second, designated hitter Chaz Eiguren singled to center to score Cunningham. Larkin then scored on a wild pitch by Prior to cut the USC to one. On a 2-0 count, freshman Ronald Flores came into the game and allowed a walk (charged to Prior) to shortstop Scott Holzhauer.
After Montrenes entered the game, he threw a wild pitch that allowed pinch runner David Garza to advance to third and Holzhauer to second. An intentional walk loaded the bases for left fielder Grant Culver, who struck out for the second out in the inning. Catcher Troy Lunsford walked as Garza scored for the tying run. On a 3-2 count, McLamore took ball four for the game-winner.
The Trojans broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth inning, with an RBI single by first baseman Bill Peavey (Brisbane/Serra HS) and RBI doubles by Garibaldi and third baseman Justin Gemoll (San Jose/UC Santa Barbara).
Both teams will continue their three-game series tomorrow at noon (Central Time) with the series finale on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. (CT).
