LUBBOCK, Tex. - Freshman Anthony Lunetta, sophomore Beau Craig and sophomore Aaron Fausett had three hits each to pace a 17-hit attack as the No. 6 USC Trojans beat the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 9-4, to even their weekend series at one game apiece. Craig, who celebrated his 20th birthday, went 3-for-6 on the afternoon with two RBI and added his third home run of the season, a solo shot, in the sixth inning. Craig and Lunetta both have five-game hitting streaks.
USC starting pitcher Rik Currier improved to 2-1 on the season after going seven and 2/3 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) and six hits. He struck out seven and walked two Texas Tech batters. With seven strikeouts, the junior from Dana Point (Capistrano Valley HS) is now tied with Phil Kendall for 18th place on the Trojans all-time career strikeout list with 207 career strikeouts, surpassing current Arizona Diamondbacks ace Randy Johnson (206 career strikeouts from 1983-85).
The Trojans broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run fifth inning. USC led off the inning with three straight singles by Rob Garibaldi, Lunetta and Craig and was completed with a two-out, bases-loaded single by center fielder Brian Barre. Texas Tech battled back in the bottom half of the inning with solo home runs by Miles Durham and Jason Rainey. The Red Raiders had the bases loaded, but Currier retired center field Marco Cunningham on a fly ball to right field to end the inning.
The three-game series will conclude tomorrow at 1 p.m. (Central Time) and can be heard courtesy of Texas Tech radio live on the Internet at www.texastech.com.
