July 11, 2026 | Baseball
PHILADELPHIA -- After an all-time great season on the mound for USC baseball, left-handed pitcher Mason Edwards was selected 47th overall by the Las Vegas Athletics in the second round of the 2026 MLB Draft on Saturday.
Edwards, who led the nation in strikeouts and was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year this season, is the highest Trojan draft pick since Brad Boxberger was selected 43rd overall by the Cinncinati Reds in 2009. He is the 358th draft pick in USC history.
The Los Angeles native led the NCAA with 169 strikeouts, setting a program record with 15.9 strikeouts per nine innings while leading USC to its first Super Regional Appearance in 21 years. Edwards posted a 2.07 ERA and 8-0 record, earning All-America first team recognition and being named a finalist for the National Pitcher of the Year award.
His 169 strikeouts were the fourth most in USC history and the most since Mark Prior set the program record with 202 in 2001 and his 5.08 hits allowed per nine innings was the third best mark ever posted by a Trojan pitcher.
Edwards' selection in the 2026 draft continues USC's streak of having a player selected in every MLB Draft and marks the third straight year USC has had a player picked in the Top 3 rounds.
The 2026 draft continues on Sunday with rounds 5-20.
