Lake Forest, Ill. - USC freshman golfer Hunter Mahan, playing in only his third collegiate tournament, fired a 68 second round on his way to a 213 total to claim the individual title and lead the No. 16 USC men's golf team to a runner-up finish at the Windon Memorial Classic held at Knollwood Country Club in Lake Forest, Ill., on Monday-Tuesday (October 2-3).
Mahan, who is the first Trojan to win an individual tournament title since Chad Wright did so in 1997, was part of a one-two finish for USC, as senior Nick Jones finished just a stroke behind at 214. As a team, the Trojans shot 875 and finished seven strokes behind tourney champ Okalahoma (868). USC actually led going into the final day by two strokes but couldn't hang on as the Sooners surged ahead. Minnesota finished in a tie for third with Toledo (880), while Duke finished fifth (886).
Also for USC, junior Kevin Stadler shot 225 to tie for 29th, sophomore David Oh shot 227 to tie for 38th and freshman Roderick Staunton shot 233 and tied for 49th.
Mahan, who hails from McKinney, Tex., came to USC as the nation's top-ranked junior amateur and was the 2000 American Junior Golf Association's Player of the Year.
The Trojans next play at the Taylor Made Red River Classic in Dallas, Tex., on October 9-10.
