TUCSON, ARIZ. - Junior Nick Jones shot a five-under-par 208 (including two rounds of 69) as the USC men's golf team rallied to win the team championship at the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate Tournament hosted by the University of Arizona at The Raven Golf Course at Sabino Springs, Ariz., on Tuesday (Feb. 1).
The Trojans entered the final round down a stroke, but then fired a one-over-par 285 to take the title. It was the first tournament victory for the Trojans since winning the U.S. Intercollegiate in April of 1997. USC's team score of 848 (seven stokes ahead of host Arizona) was the lowest team score by the Trojans since scoring 845 at the Taylor Made Red River Classic in October of 1996.
New Mexico (861) came in third behind Arizona (855), followed by San Diego State (870), Stanford and UCLA (tied at 875).
Individually, USC had three of the top 12 golfers and two of the top five. Jones (69, 70, 69 - 208) finished in second place, four strokes behind tournament champion Ricky Barnes of Arizona. Jones' 208 was a career low and the lowest score by a Trojan since Roger Tambellini shot 205 at the 1997 Ping Arizona Intercollegiate. Senior Nick Webb (65, 70, 76 - 211) also shot a career low and finished tied for fourth. Sophomore Kevin Stadler (71, 73, 72 - 216) continued his consistent play for the Trojans and finished 12th, while sophomore John Ray Leary (74, 71, 73 - 218) came in 22nd. Freshman David Oh (80, 74, 71 - 225) placed 55th.
"It's fun to win," said USC Director of Golf Kurt Schuette. "We are pleased, but we still feel we can play better. We just have to keep working hard to try to improve so we can move toward our ultimate goals, which are the Pac-10 and NCAA Championships."
USC resumes match play on Feb. 17-19 at the Univ. of Hawaii-Hilo "Taylor Made Big Island Invitational" at Waikoloa King & Beach Golf Club.
