Arizona State Wins Cleveland Southwestern Intercollegiate

Westlake Village, Calif.-- The Arizona State men's golf team fired a scorching 279 in the final round to overtake Brigham Young and capture the team title at the 23rd annual Cleveland Southwestern Intercollegiate Golf Classic hosted by USC at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., on Tuesday (Feb. 29).
The Sun Devils, who were behind BYU by six strokes after two rounds, shot 856 overall and featured three golfers who placed in the top eight. Brigham Young finished second (862), followed by Oregon (871), Pepperdine and Fresno State (both shot 874) and UCLA (878). Host USC shot 886 and finished eighth.
Ryan Lavoie of Oregon took the individual title. Lavoie shot a 69 first round and a 70 second round (211 overall) to edge out runner up John Lepak of Oregon State by one stroke. Lepak shot a 68 in the second round (tied with Washington's Derek Berg for lowest round in the tournament). Paul Casey (the 1998 Cleveland Southwestern champion) headed a logjam in third place at 213 that included Michael Beard of Pepperdine, Jeff Quinney of Arizona State and Gordy Scutt of Washington.
For the Trojans, Kevin Stadler finished tied for 19th (218), John Ray Leary tied for 21st (219), Nick Webb tied for 31st (222) and Nick Jones and Alex Kuyumjian tied for 56th (228).
USC next plays on March 20 when it travels to Austin, Tex., to take part in the Morris Williams Intercollegiate.
