Women's Tennis Upsets 10th-Ranked ASU

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 12th-ranked USC women's tennis team upset No. 10 Arizona State, 6-3, today at the Marks Tennis Stadium. The Women of Troy avenged an earlier loss to the Sun Devils in their first meeting in Tempe, and improve to 10-3 overall and 4-2 in the Pac-10. Arizona State falls to 10-2 and 3-1 in conference play.
In singles, USC earned three wins in straight sets at the No. 1, 2 and 4 positions. Senior Kara Warkentin, who earned her second-straight victory at No. 1 with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Karin Palme, led the Trojans. The Sun Devils earned their first point in the third match as Faye DeVera defeated USC's Jacqui Boyd, 6-1, 6-3, breaking Boyd's 11-match win streak.
With a 4-2 lead heading into doubles, the Women of Troy earned wins at No. 1 and 2 to clinch the victory. In the first match, Tiffany Brymer and Warkentin posted an 8-3 win over Mhairi Brown and Megan Yeats, while the duo of Veronika Safarova and Anita Loyola defeated ASU's DeVera and McCoury, 8-5.
The Women of Troy return to action on Wednesday, March 15, when they host No. 44 Illinois in a nonconference match. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
