LOS ANGELES -- Houston second baseman Sean Allen had three RBI on two doubles Sunday to key a rally as the No. 10 Cougars recorded the three-game series sweep with an 8-4 win over the host No. 5 USC Trojans at Dedeaux Field. It was the first time since April 2-4, 1997, that the Trojans have been swept at home when the Stanford Cardinal accomplished the feat. Houston (15-7) has won seven straight games on the road, including series sweeps at USC (12-6) and LSU.
The Trojans led off the game with two runs in the first off a bases-loaded walk to Justin Gemoll and an RBI infield single by right fielder Rob Garibaldi. Down 3-0, the Cougars countered with two runs in the fourth off an RBI double by Allen and an RBI single by center fielder Brandon Caraway. Allen's two-run double in the sixth gave the Cougars a 4-3 lead as Houston never looked back.
First baseman J.P. Woodward hit a solo home run to right in the seventh for a 5-3 lead. Shortstop Seth Davidson hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to one, but the Cougars improved on their lead with solo home runs in the eighth by Caraway and right fielder Eric Lee.
Matt Hooper (1-0) pitched 3 and 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for the Cougars, allowing only two hits. Greg Runser pitched three innings of one-hit ball to record his first save of the season while USC starter Anthony Reyes (2-2) allowed four runs in five innings of work for the loss.
The Trojans travel to the University of San Diego on Tuesday (March 14) for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. before traveling to Stanford next weekend for a non-conference three-game series.
