LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 19th-ranked USC men's tennis team won its fifth straight with a 6-1 victory over No. 57 Purdue, Thursday afternoon at Marks Tennis Stadium. The Trojans improve to 11-4 overall, 4-1 in the Pac-10, while Purdue falls to 6-5 this season.
USC won two of three doubles matches to earn its first point of the day. With new pairings, the Trojans earned victories in the No. 1 and 2 positions. The Boilermakers posted a win at No. 2 doubles, as Carl McCafferty and Derek Miller defeated Ryan Moore and Andrew Park, 9-7.
The Trojans nearly swept all six singles matches, but an injury Patrick Gottesleben forced him to retire his match after taking a 7-5 lead in the first set. Purdue did not allow USC to glide through the following five matches, forcing spots 2, 3, 4 and 5 into third set tiebreakers. At the No. 6 position, USC's Parker Collins was the only one to complete his match in two sets as he earned a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Laith Al-Agba.
The Trojans return to action tomorrow, March 14, against No. 32 Clemson. USC will host the Tigers at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
