LOS ANGELES -- Third baseman Justin Gemoll collected five RBIs while Rik Currier pitched 7 and 2/3 strong innings Saturday as the No. 20 USC Trojans defeated the Washington State Cougars, 12-7, at Dedeaux Field. The Trojans have won the first two games of the Pac-10 conference series and will look for the series sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The Cougars got on the scoreboard with an RBI single by designated hitter Zach Bode in the first before the Trojans exploded for five runs in the third and six in the fourth.
In the third inning, catcher Beau Craig hit an RBI single to right, scoring shortstop Seth Davidson. Gemoll lined a two-run triple to right and scored on a two-run homer to right by first baseman Bill Peavey. Gemoll added a two-run homer in the fourth and designated hitter Josh Persell followed with a solo shot to center. Up 12-3 in the top of the ninth, the Trojans (18-9, 2-0) held off a late Cougars (12-15, 2-3) rally as Stefan Bailie hit a three-run homer to left off reliever Raul Lepe as part of a four-run rally. USC pitcher Brian Bannister, however, came into the game and got Ray Hattenburg to ground into the game-ending double play. Craig and second baseman Anthony Lunetta both had 3-for-4 performances for the Trojans. Currier (6-2) gave up three runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and three walks. With his eighth strikeout, Currier moved into 10th place on USC??TMs all-time list for most career strikeouts and now has 246 career strikeouts. Tyson Thompson (1-4) gave up five runs in 2 and 2/3 innings of work for the Cougars on six hits.
