LOS ANGELES -- Sophomore Rob Garibaldi hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to seal the USC Trojans' 6-2 non-conference victory Tuesday over the No. 21 UCLA Bruins at Dedeaux Field. The game was played as a makeup for the Feb. 27 non-conference game that was postponed due to rain. With the win, USC registered a 4-2 record against UCLA in six games this season.
Ronald Flores (2-1) recorded another strong start for the Trojans, who now improve to 26-15 on the season. Flores went seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out six batters and walking only one. The Trojans scored three runs in the first (two unearned) off losing pitcher Chad Cislak (0-4) for the Bruins, who are now 24-16 on the season. In the first with runners at second and third, third baseman Justin Gemoll struck out swinging, but the ball got away from catcher Forrest Johnson. On the throw to first, the ball bounced off the glove of first baseman Garrett Atkins and rolled into right field, allowing Brian Barre and Seth Davidson to score. Gemoll scored on a fielder's choice by Beau Craig.
The Bruins answered with an RBI single in the third by Josh Canales and a run-scoring groundout by Chase Utley.
Gemoll and Josh Persell both singled in the eighth inning. Garibaldi was the first batter that Charles Merricks, who was brought in to pitch, faced before allowing the two-out home run.
The Trojans will host the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal in an important Pac-10 Conference series this weekend, beginning on Thursday (April 20) at 6 p.m. All three games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
