USC Baseball Stops Stanford, 7-3

LOS ANGELES -- Freshman Anthony Lunetta had three RBI and Eric Verbryke had two RBI while junior pitcher Rik Currier allowed only five hits over 6 and 2/3 innings of work Thursday as the USC Trojans defeated the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal, 7-3, in the first game of a Pac-10 Conference series at Dedeaux Field. The victory snapped the Cardinal's eight-game winning streak.
Verbryke put the Trojans (27-15, 8-5) on the board first with a two-run double in the bottom of the second while Lunetta hit a two-run single in the third off Stanford starter Justin Wayne (9-2). With the loss, the Cardinal (29-10, 9-4) pitcher lost for only the third time in his career (25-3). Wayne allowed six runs in five innings.
Currier struck out eight batters and walked six to improve to 10-2 on the
season and record his fifth straight victory. Pete Montrenes pitched 2 and
1/3 scoreless innings to record his second save this season.
Stanford's John Gall set a new school record with his 68th career double,
which he hit in the seventh inning. He also tied a career high by extending
his hitting streak to 13 games.
Junior Seth Davidson went 3-for-5 with one RBI for the Trojans. The series will resume tomorrow at 6 p.m. with the series finale on Saturday (April 22) at 1 p.m.
