LOS ANGELES -- First baseman Craig Thompson's two-run homer in the ninth inning with two outs broke open a pitchers' duel Friday as the No. 4 Stanford Cardinal defeated the USC Trojans, 4-1, in a Pacific-10 Conference game at Dedeaux Field to even the three-game series at one game apiece. Right fielder Joe Borchard hit a solo shot to left field in the fourth inning for the game-winner.
Jason Young improved to 10-2 on the season for the Cardinal (30-10, 10-4) by going 7 and 2/3 innings and allowing one run (unearned) on three hits. He struck out seven and walked three. Mark Prior, who has not won since March 3, dropped to 5-6 on the season for the Trojans (27-16, 8-6). Prior went eight innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. Prior struck out 10 batters and walked only one.
Jeff Bruksch threw 1 and 1/3 innings of scoreless relief against his former team (Bruksch played for USC last season) to record his ninth save of the season. He struck out Prior, who batted as the designated hitter, to end the game.
The Trojans scored their only run in the first on an error by Stanford second baseman Chris O'Riordan, scoring Seth Davidson from second. The Cardinal tied the game in the second on an RBI single by Andy Topham, scoring Borchard from second.
The Trojans left 10 men on base and had the bases loaded three times, but could not capitalize.
The series will conclude tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
