LOS ANGELES -- The No. 4 Stanford Cardinal belted five home runs Saturday in an 18-4 rout against the USC Trojans to win two of three Pac-10 Conference games this weekend at Dedeaux Field. It was the worst home loss suffered by USC since April 26, 1985, when the Trojans lost, 16-1, also to Stanford. The Cardinal (31-10, 11-4) pounded out 23 hits. Edmund Muth went 4-for-6 with a double, home run and three RBI while Damian Alvarado went 4-for-5 with a double, home run and two RBI. Joe Borchard hit his 11th home run of the season and recorded a home run in every game this weekend for Stanford. The Trojans (27-17, 8-7) got home runs from Justin Gemoll, Beau Craig and Mark Prior.
Tim Cunningham went 5 and 1/3 innings for Stanford to improve to 4-1 on the season. Anthony Reyes (3-6) took the loss after allowing six runs in five innings for the Trojans. Mike Gosling no-hit the Trojans through 3 and 2/3 innings to record his third save of the season.
Muth hit a two-run shot in the third to give Stanford a 2-0 lead. USC answered with an RBI single by Seth Davidson in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the fourth, Alvarado hit a two-run homer, followed by an Andy Topham solo shot for a three-run inning. The Cardinal broke the game open with a six-run seventh inning, thanks to a three-run home run by Arik VanZandt and Borchard's two-run homer.
The Trojans travel to UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday (April 25) for a 2 p.m. game before hosting Arizona State in a Pac-10 series next weekend at Dedeaux Field, beginning on Friday (April 28) at 6 p.m.
