Women's Tennis Endures 5-4 Loss To Cal

Los Angeles, Calif. -- 10th-ranked USC women's tennis (13-5, 2-3 Pac-10) endured a 5-4 loss to eighth-ranked Cal (12-4 overall), today at Marks Tennis Stadium. With the loss, the Women of Troy fall below .500 in the Pac-10 for the first time this year.
Singles play was evenly matched between the Trojans and Golden Bears. Cal began the afternoon with wins at No. 1, 2, and 3, but USC answered with the next three consecutive victories. To begin the Trojans' run, Veronika Safarova earned the most convincing win of the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-2 decision over Claire Curran. The Bears tied the match, 3-3, at the No. 6 spot as Morisa Yang defeated Tiffany Brymer, 7-6, 3-6, 0-6.
Cal's Karoline Bogersen and Anita Kurimay tallied a quick 8-1 victory over Brymer and Kara Warkentin to begin doubles competition. A USC victory by Caroline Christian and Safarova at No. 3 brought the score to three apiece, allowing the final score to be decided at the No. 2 spot. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, Anita Loyola and Jacqui Boyd saw Cal's Curran and Amy Jensen claim the final match for, 8-4, for the Golden Bears' 5-4 victory.
The Women of Troy will face No. 1 Stanford tomorrow (April 8) at Marks Tennis Stadium at noon.
