Malibu, Calif. -- Following the completion of the NCAA women's tennis individual championships, freshman Jewel Peterson was honored as a 2000 singles All-American according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The selections are made according to individual performances at the NCAA championships. A singles All-American must be a top-16 seed in the NCAA singles championship, reach the NCAA round of 16 or complete the season ranked in the top 20 according to the ITA collegiate rankings. Peterson earned her spot by reaching the quarterfinals of the NCAAs, before falling to eventual-champion Laura Granville of Stanford.
The last time a USC freshman was honored as a singles All-American was in 1992 when freshman Petra Schmitt finished her first season ranked No. 20 according to the ITA.
