14-6) on Friday (April 12) and No. 14 Pacific (10-16, 8-12) on Saturday (April

All of USC's home MPSF matches are broadcast live over the
internet on www.usctrojans.com.
RANKINGS
USC is
not ranked in the latest USA Today/AVCA coaches poll or the Volleyball
poll.? Stanford is ranked seventh by USA Today/AVCA coaches and by
Volleyball.? Pacific is ranked 14th by USA Today/AVCA coaches, but not
ranked by Volleyball.
OPPONENTS
USC holds a 45-18 lead
in its series with Stanford, but lost 3-0 in an MPSF match on the road
earlier this year to snap a 5-match Trojan winning streak over the
Cardinal.? Stanford is led by outside hitters Curt Toppel (446 K, .360, 24
SA, 54 BK), Marcus Skacel (251 K, .296, 136 DG) and Billy Strickland (206 K,
.356, 121 DG, 51 BK) and middle blocker Paul Bocage (222 K, .457, 63 BK).?
USC is 18-5 alltime versus Pacific, but had its 3-match winning streak
over the Tigers snapped with a 3-1 MPSF road loss earlier this year.?
Pacific, which plays at Pepperdine on April 12, features outside hitters Aaron
Wachtfogel (339 K, 17 SA, 179 DG) and Martin Berntsen (231 K, 138 DG), middle

LAST
MATCHES
No. 6 UC Santa Barbara swept USC, 30-23, 30-23, 30-27, in an
April 3 MPSF? road match.? It was a school record-tying ninth straight
loss for Troy.? Brook Billings had a match-best 13 kills and a team-high 4
digs, while Beau Rawi had 11 kills while hitting .471.? UCSB outhit USC,
.443 to .209, and had more blocks, 10.5 to 3.0.? The Trojans hit under .200
in the first and third games, while the Gauchos were over .400 in all 3
games.? On April 6, USC lost an MPSF match at No. 10 Cal State Northridge,
30-25, 26-30, 30-27, 30-25.? It was USC's school-record 10th straight
defeat.? Billings had a team-best 13 kills and a career-high 9 blocks (also
a match high), Rawi had 11 kills and 5 blocks, Josh Day had 9 kills (hitting
.353) and 7 blocks (tying a career high) and Ian Gallagher had 8 kills (hitting
.313).? Although CSUN hit only .175 and got outblocked by USC (17.0 to
10.0), Troy hit just .152.
SLOW START
At 5-21 overall,
USC is off to its slowest start in program history.? The 21 losses are a
school season record.? USC is in the midst of a school-record
10-match losing streak.? All 10 losses in this streak were MPSF
contests, also a school mark for longest league losing streak.? Troy
has lost its past 6 home matches, also a school record.? Earlier
this season, the Trojans had an 8-match losing streak (all MPSF matches).?
In fact, USC has won just 1 of its last 19 matches.? During its 8-match
losing streak earlier this year, the Trojans lost 16 consecutive games and won
only 1 game out of 25.? During the current 10-match skid, USC has won just
5 games.? Of its 21 losses this season, 13 have been 3-0 and 7 were
3-1.
TOUGH AT HOME
USC is 213-70 (.753) in home matches
in its 26-year history.? From 1999 to 2001, the Trojans had a school-record
19-match home winning streak in the quaint North Gym.
VOLLEYBALL
SCHOOL
Besides the 4 NCAA crowns (1977-80-88-90) that USC's men have
won, the Women of Troy have captured 4 national volleyball titles.? USC's
women won the AIAW trophy in 1976, 1977 and 1980, and the NCAA crown in 1981,
all under coach Chuck Erbe.? The 2001 Women of Troy advanced to the NCAA
Final Four, but lost in the semifinals.
COACH PAT
POWERS
Legendary Olympic gold medalist, collegiate All-American and
pro beach star Pat Powers returned in 1997 to his alma mater--which he
led to the 1980 NCAA title as a player--to become the USC men's volleyball head
coach and help bring the Trojans back to national prominence.?? Now in
his sixth year, his career mark is 105-81.? In 1997, his first
season, Powers put USC back on track, with its first winning season since 1994
at 18-14. In 1998, his Trojans went 17-17 and missed the MPSF Tournament by just
one win.? In 1999, the 24-12 Trojans advanced to the finals of the MPSF
tourney and earned a No. 7 national ranking.? In 2000, USC shared the MPSF
Pacific Division title and went 26-6 with a No. 4 national ranking.? In
2001, USC went 15-11 overall (No. 10 final ranking) and qualified for the MPSF
tourney.? The 6-5 Powers is one of the greatest players in international
volleyball history. He was a member of the U.S. National Team for nine years
(1978-86) and started at outside hitter on a squad that won America's first-ever
"Triple Crown": the 1984 Olympics, 1985 World Cup and 1986 World
Championships.
RETURNING STARTERS
USC returned 3
starters from 2001:? outside hitter Brook Billings, middle blocker
Josh Day and setter Miles McGann.? Gone from last year are
4-year starting outside hitters Trevor Julian and Eli Fairfield, plus middle
blocker Donny Killian (now a Trojan assistant coach).
"POINTS
SCORED" PLAYER VALUES
With rally scoring being used in the men's
collegiate game, a clear "points scored" value can be placed on each
player.?? Add a player's kills, aces, solo blocks and half his block
assists, then subtract hitting errors, blocking errors, serving errors, receive
errors and ballhandling errors.? Finally, divide that figure by his matches
and games played.? That will equal his "points scored" per match and game
(plus or minus).? Here are the values for USC's
players:
