LOS ANGELES - Lacey Ubaldi's goal at 14:42 gave the Pepperdine Waves the 1-0 victory against the USC Trojans in a first-round game of the 2003 NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament at Drake Stadium on the UCLA campus. Ubaldi scored her 10th goal of the season from about 10 yards out on the right side.
Pepperdine improves to 14-5-1 on the season and will play the winner of tonight's UCLA-San Diego match on Sunday at 1 p.m. USC finishes the season with a 9-8-4 mark.
The Women of Troy dominated the stat sheet as the Waves only recorded three shots, but the key goal came on a turnover by USC goalie Julie Peterson. Ubaldi and Megan Woods created a two-on-one situation and after a Peterson save, Ubaldi was able to collect the ball and put Pepperdine on the board.
Anna Picarelli was solid in goal for the Waves, recording 11 saves and increasing her season total to 10.5 shutouts.
The lone bright spot for the Trojans was the brief return of senior Jessica Edwards in the second half. Edwards, who fractured her right leg during a game in late September, made her first appearance in six weeks.
USC loses only three seniors from this year's team: Edwards, midfielder Megan Abbamonto and defender Amanda Roach. Abbamonto registered three shots in the final game of her collegiate career.
