LOS ANGELES - Robert Tarr had 17 kills and 8 digs to lead the No. 4-ranked Long Beach State men's volleyball team to a 30-17, 30-27, 30-27 win over unranked USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (March 22) in USC's Lyon Center.
Long Beach State improved to 15-8 overall and 9-7 in the MPSF, while USC dropped its fifth consecutive match to fall to 5-19 and 2-14.
Tarr hit .480 overall. Teammate Scott Touzinsky added 13 kills while hitting .409 and David Lee had 9 blocks for the 49ers, who had a better hitting percentage (393 to .122) and more blocks (10.5 to 5.5), digs (28 to 18) and aces (7 to 1) than the Trojans.
Ian Gallagher led USC with 11 kills, while Joao Grangeiro had 8 digs.
After the first game was tied at 10-10, LBSU scored 6 of the next 7 points to gain control. The 49ers, who scored the opening 5 points of the next game, fought back from a 24-22 deficit to take that second game. The final game was tied at 18-18 before LBSU opened up a 26-21 lead which it never relinquished. The 49ers hit a stellar .464 and .469 in the first 2 games, respectively.
USC next travels to Northern California to take on UC Santa Cruz on Wednesday (March 26) in a non-conference match, followed by MPSF contests at Stanford on Friday (March 28) and Pacific on Saturday (March 29).
