Rowing Beats UCLA, 6-0, For Gauntlet Points

LOS ANGELES - The USC women's rowing team nearly swept UCLA in the third-annual dual race between the two crosstown rivals on Sunday morning at the USC boathouse in the Port of Los Angeles. The Women of Troy won three races to beat the Bruins 6-0 and claim all five rowing points for the Lexus Gauntlet.
The winner of the annual USC-UCLA dual is determined by a point system similar to the one used at the Pac-10 Championships. Three points is awarded to the Varsity Eight winner, two to the JV Eight and one apiece to the winners of the Varsity Four and Novice Eight races.
USC won the Varsity Eight, JV Eight and Varsity Four races, and was in position to capture a win in the Novice Eight, but the race was ruled a no contest due to interference. USC and UCLA's Novice Eight boats were head-to-head in the final 500 meters when a motorboat crossed the path, causing the crews to veer off course. USC's oars got caught in netting the motorboat was trailing.
Victories in the other three races were not nearly as dramatic as the Women of Troy seemed to ease past the Bruins. The Varsity Eight boat won significantly (6:00.3), finishing 10-seconds ahead of UCLA's boat (6:10.6). With a 2.7-second split, the Trojans' JV Eight boat (6:21.7) crossed the finish a length ahead of the Bruins (6:24.4).
USC displayed its strongest performance of the day in the Varsity Four race, in which the Trojans raced two boats, with both finishing ahead of UCLA. The "A" crew completed the course in 6:58.0 and almost 24 seconds ahead of the Bruins (7:21.5). The "B" boat finished second in 7:01.6.
