Women's Golf Seeks To Defend NCAA Title

THE FACTS--The No. 7 USC women's golf team competes in the 2004 NCAA Women's Golf Championships hosted by Auburn University at the Lake Course at Grand National in Opelika, Ala., on Tuesday-Friday (May 18-21). The championships are a four-day 72-hole event. Play begins at 8 a.m. CST each day. Twenty-four teams and a total of 126 participants will compete. The team scoring is figured by using the low four scores out of the five golfers on each team per round. The tournament will be shown on CBS on tape delay in late June.
BACK-TO-BACK?--USC won its first NCAA team title in women's golf in 2003 and will be going for its second in 2004.
LAST YEAR'S TOURNAMENT--The USC women's golf team--led by NCAA individual champion Mikaela Parmlid--captured its first-ever national title at the 2003 NCAA Women's Golf Championships held at Purdue's Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex. It was the first NCAA team championship--women's or men's--in USC's grand golfing history. USC led wire-to-wire in the tournament and finished with a 72-hole total of 1197 (+45). Pepperdine was second, 15 strokes behind with a score of 1212 (+60). Parmlid won a sudden-death playoff over Florida's Andrea Vander Lende to join Jennifer Rosales as the only Women of Troy golfers to win the NCAA individual title. Parmlid shot 297 (+9) overall.
SO FAR THIS YEAR--USC has a team stroke average of 303.25 with its best finish being a second-place showing at the Ping/ASU Invitational. On the season, the Women of Troy have nine top-10 team finishes and seven top-5 finishes.
RANKINGS--USC is ranked seventh in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.
