USC Blows Away Competition in Season's First Race
The USC women's rowing team opened its fall racing schedule with a bang, taking two races at the Head of the American and defeating 2005 national champion, California on Saturday, Oct. 29.
Hosted by the CSUS Aquatic Center and featuring West Coast rowing programs, the one-day regatta was a successful outing for the Trojans' first of the year. The Women of Troy fielded two Varsity Eight crews and a Varsity Four crew for the weekend.
The USC Varsity Eight "A" team, pulled off a stunning victory, coming from behind California in a 10 second staggard start to pull ahead of the Golden Bears in the last 1000 meters of the race. USC `s time of 16:47 is one of the fastest clocked for the regatta. "Physiologically this is a big step for our team," said head coach Zenon Babraj. The Varsity Eight "B" team placed ninth in the regatta with a time of 18:27.
The Varsity Four crew, winners of the 2005 Pac-10 Championship, won the race in a time of 19:16, 43 seconds faster then second place California's "A" team (19:59).
USC's Novice boats will begin competition Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Newport Autumn Festival in Newport Beach Calif.
