LA JOLLA, Calif.- The UC San Diego men's volleyball team won its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match by defeating Southern California 30-27, 26-30, 30-27, 30-25. The Tritons were led by Luke Honnette (22 kills), Adam Toren (17 kills) and Russ Hardy (14 kills) who combined for 53 of UCSD's 69 kills. The Trojans were led by Joao Grangeiro's 16 kills and match-high 13 digs. The Tritons improve to 2-19, 1-16 MPSF while the Trojans drop to 6-20, 3-16 MPSF.
In game one, UCSD scored the first four points of the match to jump out to an early lead. USC got back into the game quickly by tying it at 10-10 on a Grangeiro kill. The teams stayed within two points of each other until a USC attack error made it 25-22 UCSD. The lead would remain at two to three points the rest of the way as UCSD's Adam Toren put down the kill to end game on 30-27 UCSD. The Tritons took the game even though they were outhit .250-.061.
In game two, USC scored the first three points of the game and would lead 15-9 after a UCSD attack error. The Tritons would battle back to 17-19 after a Honnette kill. From that point, USC went on a small run to take a 24-19 lead. UCSD would battle back again as a Toren kill made it 24-25. The Trojans would come out on top by scoring six of the remaining eight points as Fernando Barron ended game two 30-26 USC.
The third game was played well by both squads as USC (19-5-28) and UCSD (20-4-32) each hit .500. With the Tritons ahead 10-8, UCSD scored five of the next seven points to take a 15-10 lead. USC battled back quickly to come within 20-19 after a Grangeiro kill. The Tritons would continue to hold onto one and two point leads for the rest of the game as Russ Hardy put down the final point for UCSD 30-27.
In game four, with the score at 5-5, UCSD scored the next six points to take the 11-5 lead. The Tritons would continue to lead late at 23-17 and 27-18 after a USC attack error. With the Tritons ahead 29-20, USC did not give up without a fight by scoring the next five points to make it 29-25. UCSD's Toren put down the final kill to give the Tritons their first home win of the season 30-25.
