Ivan Perez had 13 kills and Taylor Evans added 11 kills to lead the No.6 BYU men's volleyball team to a 30-25, 30-15, 30-28 victory over USC in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Saturday (March 5) at USC's Lyon Center.
The Cougars improved to 11-6 overall and 6-4 in the MPSF, while the Trojans fell to 5-16 and 1-11.
While Perez (6 digs) and Evans (3 digs and one ace) led BYU in kills, it was the sharp hitting of middle blocker Michael Burke and outside hitter Victor Batista that really put the nail in USC's coffin. Burke had 9 kills on the night (hitting .900) and Batista finished with 7 kills (hitting .667).
For the Trojans, Matt Mosko brought a surge of life from the bench, finishing with 5 kills (on .667 hitting) and one ace.
BYU did have trouble serving throughout the match (18 serving errors in 3 games) but USC had no luck capitalizing off those extra points.
BYU outhit USC, .488 to .130, and out-blocked the Trojans, 10-6.
USC next will take on top-ranked UCLA next Thursday, March 10, in the North Gym at USC.
