NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Nils Nielsen had a team-high 15 kills and James Lischer added 11 as eighth-ranked Cal State Northridge defeated USC 30-23, 30-17, 30-28 on Wednesday at Wells Fargo Court.
With the win, the Matadors improve to 17-12 overall and 10-11 in the MPSF while the Trojans drop to 6-22 overall and 3-18 in conference.
Nielsen hit .367 on his way to 15 kills, while Lischer hit a team-high .444. Nielsen also had a season-high three solo blocks. Brian Waite added eight kills and four blocks and Isaac Kneubuhl chipped in six kills. CSUN setter Jeff Conover had 37 assists, seven digs and two aces as the Matadors hit .356 (46-14-90) as a team.
For the Trojans, Juan Figueroa knocked down a match-high 17 kills in the loss while Andrew Vernon and Joao Grangeiro each added seven kills. Vernon also had five blocks while Grangeiro and Evan Burden each recorded a team-high seven digs. USC setter Gio Altamura posted 38 assists as the Trojans hit .144 (38-25-90) as a team.
The Matadors out-pointed the Trojans 58.0 to 47.5 but were out-blocked by a slight 9.5 to 9.0 margin. USC also had 26 team digs to 23 for CSUN.
