USC Wins Playoff To Advance To NCAA Championships
May 21, 2005 | Men's Golf
The Trojans, Pepperdine and South Carolina all finished with three-day totals of 864 (+24), but with nine teams ahead of them with berths to the NCAAs already in hand and only 10 spots available, the trio of 10th-place finishers had to go to a playoff.
USC didn't let the drama go much further, winning the playoff in the first series of sudden death competition.
Juniors Tyler Ley and Taylor Wood fired 2-under and 1-under pars, respectively, to lead USC in regulation. USC shot its second 286 of the three-day event and will compete for the NCAA Championship June 1-4 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md.
The top 10 teams from each of the NCAA's three regions advanced to the final tournament.
UNLV won the title with a combined 846 (+6) in a region in which there were only 18 shots separating first from 10th. It was so tough that Auburn, ranked among the top 5 all year, and South Carolina, a top 20 team, both failed to move on.
Ley shot a 68 and Wood shot a 69, rounds which both featured four birdies. Wood was USC's highest finisher at 214 (+4), tied for 21st while Ley was a stroke back at 215 (+5), tied for 25th.
Junior Bradley Shaw shot a 75 to finish at 219 (+9), tied for 56th. Shaw was USC's last golfer of the day and had two birdies and a bogey on the last three holes.
Senior Ben Hayes had three birdies but still finished with a 74 to finish tied with Shaw at 219.
Sophomore Joshua Wooding shot a final-round 75 to finish at 221, tied for 66th.
