Wood Remains In NCAA Title Contention After 2nd Round

USC senior Taylor Wood, who started the day tied for second, fell off the pace a bit with a second-round 77 (+5), but is still in title contention halfway through play of the 2006 NCAA Men's Golf Championships at Crosswater G.C. in Sunriver, Ore., on Thursday (June 1).
Wood, who fired a 6-under first-round 66 on Wednesday, teed off on the 10th hole to start his second round and struggled for the first nine holes for a 6-over 42. Wood regrouped on the back 9 (the 1st through 9th holes) to card a 1-under 35, leaving him 1-under for the tournament at 143.
Wood finished the second day tied for 23rd. First-day leader Kyle Reifers of Wake Forerst maintained his lead and is now 9-under while four others are tied for second at 6-under.
Wood was USC's highest finisher four times in 12 tournaments in 2005-2006, including a season-best tying tie for second at the NCAA East Regional that garnered him his individual NCAA Championships berth.
Ranked No. 34 in the nation by Golfweek.com, Wood finished seventh at the 2005 NCAA Championships, helping USC to a sixth-place finish.
Wood is trying to join Scott Simpson (1976, 1977) and Ron Commans (1981) as USC's NCAA individual title winners.
