The No. 14 USC women's swimming and diving team, led by two-time NCAA champion Rebecca Soni, begins the 2007-2008 dual-meet season with a Pac-10 conference clash against Oregon State on Friday (Oct. 12) at McDonald's Swim Stadium.
USC, which was 5-4 overall last year in head coach Dave Salo's first season, 3-4 in the Pac-10, defeated Oregon State last year on campus, 63-32. The Beavers are led by fourth-year head coach Larry Liebowitz, who was an assistant head coach at USC for eight years before moving to Corvallis.
Soni is USC's only returning All-American. She won the 200y breaststroke at the 2007 NCAA Championships for the second year in a row and also repeated as an All-American in the 100y breast with a sixth-place finish.
In addition to Soni, nine other Women of Troy return with NCAA Championships experience: seniors Emily Goetsch, Whitney Hentzen, Brittany Allen and diver Kim Popp, juniors Kristen Lahey, Rachael Waller, Missy McIntyre and Katy Houston and sophomore Whitney Stephenson.
Allen (500y free, 1650y free), Lahey (100y fly, 100y back), Soni (100y and 200y breast), Popp (platform) and Houston (200y breast) were all Pac-10 Championship event finalists, as was sophomore diver Alex DeMond (1-meter).
